On the basis of utility, grapes are classified into three groups: Table Grapes, Raisin Grapes and Wine Grapes.

Table Grapes:

Those grape varieties, which are consumed in fresh form, come under table grape. They have attractive colour and good keeping quality. 

Raisin Grapes:

These are dried grapes. They should preferably be seedless and should have higher sugar content (20-22 brix), crisp pulp and thin skin. 

Wine Grapes:

Grape varieties, which are usedfor wine making, come under this group. 

Essential Elements:

Besides light, temperature, mechanical support, waterand air, these are certain elements which are essential for the normal growth of plants and like all the other higher plants grapevines also require all sixteen essential elements for their growth and development. 

Nutrients are taken up primarily by the roots in the form of an aqueous solution in the soil.For healthy growth,a plant requires:

Energy: Light for photosynthesis 


Gases: CO2: basic component of organic matter 

             O2: basic component and catalytic respiration.

- Nitrogen      - Phosphorus     - Potassium     -Calcium     - Magnesium    -Sulfur 

Micro nutrients: Ferrous, Zinc, Copper, Boron, Manganesse, Silicon, Molybdenum, Sodium, Cobalt, Chlorine.
